Congratulations you are about to have your first child! There are so many thoughts and plans that you are putting into place as you are preparing for your life to drastically change. Now have you considered safety at home? Fear not! For all you new parents out there here are some tips on ways to baby proof your home to ensure that your little one can’t get hurt or into any trouble.
Lock All Cabinets & Cupboards
You will be surprised how often your curious little one will try to get into places they are not supposed to be. It is extremely important to make sure that all cupboards and cabinets have child safety locks on them. This will ensure that medications, cleaning supplies, detergents, and any other hazardous products are securely locked away out of the grasp of children.
Hide All Small Objects
Kids have fast little fingers! You want to make sure that all small objects that they could potentially choke on are out of reach. Walk into each room and take a good look around and even try to sit on the floor. It will give you a sense of everything that will be on their level so you can better prepare and take away and secure anything that is potentially a danger.
Hide the Cords
Last thing you want is your littler one grabbing or chewing on any cords. The best way to avoid that is to make sure there are none within reach that can be yanked on or easily accessed. You can wrap the cords up and stow them at higher levels so it is out of their reach.
Secure Furniture in Place
Any large pieces of furniture that could fall over if it were to be pulled on or climbed on should be secured to the wall or floor to your best ability. Children will climb and hold onto things to help them stand. You want to make sure that they do not accidently pull a large heavy piece of furniture onto themselves.
Cover the Outlets
Protecting your kids from putting their fingers in electrical sockets is extremely important. Go around your home and buy the plug covers that will keep them out and ensure they do not hurt themselves.
Lock Your Toilets
A quick and easy way to protect your home is to put a lock on your toilet seat. They are a cheap and effective item that can prevent a drowning hazard and you can rest easy.
Thinking about Crib Placement
It may not be something that you think of right away but be cognizant of wear you put the crib. You want to make sure it is out of reach of any strings, cords, and dressers with items on top of it.
Lastly, don’t stress! You got this!
